Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Ok, so I got a problem with 12-31-78...

Finally went out and bought the 4 cd package. Since I love 12-12-78, 12-16-78, 12-19-78 and 12-30-78, I figured it would be great.

Actually it was a little more average than those shows. Ah well, who cares, at least the Dark Star was cool and there is a nice reverb to it.

BUT I still got a problem. And I need your help.
The "We bid you goodnight" seems to have its first two-thirds missing, and just fades in.

Where can I get it? I assume there is an AUD version available?

Thanks in advance.

12-31-1978 is one of the top ten Dead shows out there...winterland closing, new years eve, great setlists...i enjoy the playing, they sound tight with strong singing, give another listen to Ramble on Rose, Terrapin, Miracle, NFA, Wharf Rat...those are some damn good versions, never pooh pooh a Dark Star and St. Stephen, they glide through both on a nice groove...Bid u Goodnite encore...Bill Graham doing his thing all night and morning, what more do you want in a dead show...as far as top ten shows played musically and audio fidelity available, it's not, but overall, all things considered yes...

Thanks for mentioning that Samson. That brings back memories. This girl really wanted to hear that song to dance with me at my house. The version I could find fastest was the DVD of 78-12-31. What a great night.

Now that I have remeniced imho this is one of the finest shows the boys have played. The entire band looked happy the entire night. Ken Kesey was there playing his percussion contraption. The Dark Star. Oh and if I'm right that's the Terrapin where Phil looks way too happy even for Phil. I always thought that he and Hart might have been under some kind of influence that night. Oh I almost forgot about that Johnny B. Goode. Jerry was rocking that song harder than I have seen him rock before.

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: My problem: Does anybody know where I can get the uncut WBYG encore from 12-31-78??

THAT is my only real beef with it.

On the official CD, the track seems to fade in right in when Jerry is singing "remember right well, I remember right well."

If I recall correctly, the song generally goes like this:

1. Lay down, my dear brothers...(etc)
2. Lay down, my dear brothers...(etc)
3. Tell A for the ark...(etc)
4. Tell B for the beast... (etc)
5. Walkin' in Jerusalem... (etc)
6. I remember right well... (etc)
7. Lay down, my dear brothers... (Etc)

To be as clear as possible, it seems like the recording of WBYG on the 4-disc set begins at step 6 above, implying that the first 2/3 of the song has been skipped.

Does anyone know if there is an AUD somewhere that captures the entirety of it? Thanx.

GOOD Luck. It wasn't even included in the original radio/TV simulcast on KSAN 94.9/KQED 9. JBG and Mickey's "happy fuckin new year" is the last of it...

Can't answer your question but I found many folks think this gig is average to above average. I love it and think it's awesome. I thought most folks would agree but I got tons of other 78 shows from people on the forum that they feel are better.

I know, I heard a lot about it too. Personally i feel that the main strength of the recording is the super-good sound quality, provided by Winterland. Maybe I'll give it another listen. It's just that the St. Steve struck me as just a tad anemic compared to 12-30.

At the very least it must have been great to get the first set at Midnight and get out when the sun was up
